ABB solves level measurement problem for wastewater plant

Case Study: An ABB K-TEK LM200 laser level transmitter is helping a well-known wastewater plant return to reliable level measurement, after issues with a competitor’s hydrostatic level transmitter.

The company uses level measurement to activate pumps to a pre-treatment plant when the water reaches a pre-determined volume. Previous measurement techniques failed to cope with the amount of debris and grit present in the effluent, which clogged up sensors, causing inaccurate readings and making them difficult to re-calibrate.

The ABB K-TEK LM200 laser transmitter is ideal for this application and was purposefully designed for the measurement of dry bulk solids, opaque liquids, and slurries at distances of up to 200 feet. It features an advanced timing system and sophisticated, self-correcting signal processing function that allows it to accurately and reliably measure level, distance, and position in the harshest of conditions.

Mike Caliel appointed President and CEO of Invensys Operations Management

Invensys plc announces the appointment of Michael J (Mike) Caliel as President and CEO of Invensys Operations Management with effect from 1 January 2012.

Mike was previously with Invensys from 1993 to 2006, latterly as Chief Executive of Invensys Process Systems, the largest of the predecessor companies that were brought together to form Invensys Operations Management in early 2009. He has over 25 years experience in the industry and was until recently CEO of Integrated Electrical Services, Inc.

He is taking over from Sudipta Bhattacharya who joined the Group in 2007 as President of the Wonderware Software division and has been the leader of Invensys Operations Management since February 2009. Sudipta has decided to leave next year to take up a new role outside Invensys. In the meantime, he will be working with Mike to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities within the division and will also be assisting on group business development in the Middle East and Asia.

Fieldbus Foundation Announces First H1 ITK 6.0 Registered Devices

AUSTIN, Texas, December 13, 2011 – The Fieldbus Foundation today announced that it has registered the first FOUNDATION™ fieldbus devices based on its H1 Interoperability Test Kit (ITK) Version 6.0.Emerson Process Management and Yokogawa supplied the registered H1 (31.25 kbit/s) devices, which were tested for their functionality and conformity with the FOUNDATION function block and transducer block specifications.

Emerson’s registered devices include the TopWorx D2-FF Discrete Valve Controller, which combines analog/digital position sensing and monitoring with FOUNDATION fieldbus communications and pilot valve output drivers for on/off applications; and the Rosemount Analytical 1066 pH Transmitter, which measures pH and ORP/Redox, and provides comprehensive sensor, transmitter, and calibration diagnostics to the bus via field diagnostics.

Yokogawa's registered devices are enhanced pressure transmitters featuring innovations in multi-sensing technology that makes optimal use of the powerful characteristics of a single-crystal silicon resonant sensor. They also support AR, IS, SC, IT and PID function blocks; NE107 field diagnostics; and software download function.

ABB completes acquisition of Powercorp

ABB to acquire Newave to broaden offering in uninterruptible power supply

Zurich and Quartino, Dec. 12, 2011 – ABB (ABBN.VX), the leading power and automation technology group, and Newave Energy Holding SA (NWEN.S), a Switzerland based leader in uninterruptible power supply (UPS), have agreed that ABB will acquire Newave in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately CHF 170 million1. The deal will strengthen ABB’s position in the power control and quality market and provide Newave with significant growth opportunities outside its traditional markets in Europe.

Under the terms of the transaction agreement, ABB today announced a voluntary all-cash public tender offer of CHF 56 per Newave share to purchase all of Newave’s publicly held shares. The offer prospectus will be published on or around Dec. 15. The offer represents a premium of 36.0 percent to the volume-weighted average share price of the last 60 trading days and a 22.4 percent premium to Newave’s closing stock price on Dec. 9. The Committee of independent members of the Board of Directors of Newave will unconditionally recommend that Newave shareholders tender their shares in the offer.
