Red Lion Controls releases HMIs with New Graphite Series

Red Lion Controls, the global experts in communication, monitoring and control for industrial automation and networking, today announced the release of its newest generation of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) – the Graphite™ series of advanced operator interface panels. With all cast-aluminum construction, the Graphite series provides the industry’s first rugged HMI solution to combine a wide range of versatile plug-in modules with protocol conversion, data logging and web-based monitoring and control.

Red Lion’s Graphite series allows customers to easily connect, monitor and control their process in industries that include manufacturing, oil and gas, and water/wastewater. The series’ range of plug-in modules enables customers to easily create a solution for today, with an option to expand to meet changing business requirements. Further, organizations will realize a reduction in development and commissioning times over traditional systems that use an HMI paired with separate I/O, PLCs and other controllers.

“We have used just about everyone’s HMIs, and Graphite is by far the best in terms of appearance and functionality,” said Pierre de Giorgio, president at BlueBay Automation. “It is the most feature-rich HMI that we have ever used, the graphics and resolution are amazing, and with Red Lion’s Crimson 3.0 software, the move to Graphite is seamless.”

Graphite HMIs are available in eight different models, in sizes ranging from 7” to 15”, with sleek bezels that provide a relatively large display given their overall dimension. Both the 7” and 10” HMIs are available as sunlight visible models. Combined with Graphite’s rugged packaging, these models are ideal for harsh outdoor environments.

Offering a built-in web server, Graphite HMIs enable users to monitor and control their application via PCs, tablets or smartphones. SMS text-messaging and email alerts provide early warning of process issues, which helps to avoid costly downtime. In addition, its built-in protocol converter allows programmers to select 13 or more simultaneous protocols from a list of over 250 to seamlessly integrate disparate devices such as PLCs, drives, barcode readers and panel meters.

MatrikonOPC Releases OPC Server for WITS

MatrikonOPC has announced the release of its OPC Server for Well site Information Transfer Specification (WITS) which provides open data connectivity to well site data systems using WITS-compliant devices. Areas in which WITS-based data is common at a well site include geology, drilling, cementing, drill stem testing, electronic data recorders (EDRs) that capture logging while drilling (LWD) and measurement while drilling (MWD) data.

“With the release of the OPC Server for WITS, end users gain direct access to their WITS data via any [OPC enabled] application,” said Darek Kominek, marketing manager at MatrikonOPC. “This application makes it easier to share and work with key data onsite and with the rest of the enterprise.”

Key features of the MatrikonOPC Server for WITS include:

  • Support for communications through TCP/IP, UDP and/or serial channels
  • Simultaneous support for WITS Level 0 compliant active and passive devices
  • Permits read and write access to available data points
  • Fully compliant with OPC DA 1.0, 2.0a and 3.0 specification

Agilent Technologies Enhances Dissolution Workstation Software for greater Control in Pharmaceutical

Agilent Technologies has introduced an enhanced version of its Dissolution Workstation Software, providing better data integration, method change control and instrument monitoring for controlling multiple dissolution systems. Dissolution is a technique used in the pharmaceutical industry to determine the rate at which pure active pharmaceutical ingredients dissolve.

The software supports laboratory capabilities to build, edit, search, retrieve, execute and archive all dissolution methods and test reports from a single interface. To improve efficiency, the new features allow users to:

  • Consolidate and maintain electronic data in one location, with options for exporting information into a laboratory information management system or into business tools such as SAP Crystal Reports or Microsoft Excel.
  • Monitor the dissolution apparatus for vibration, environmental impacts and failure investigation assistance when using the optional Instrument Module.
  • Comply with the latest enhanced mechanical qualification guidelines, including verifying accessories prior to each test.
  • Add an automated system-cleaning cycle to the end of each method, extending the life of dissolution equipment.

Rockwell Automation Enhances 3-D Capabilities in Arena Simulation Software

Organizations that are striving to enhance their operational efficiency and reliability can now realize additional value by utilizing the latest release of Rockwell Software Arena simulation software from Rockwell Automation. Arena v14.5 software extends the 3-D animation capabilities of the software to include material-handling components, such as conveyors and transporters.

The 3-D capabilities of Arena software enable users to better visualize the results of their business simulations in a realistic environment. These new capabilities extend this powerful visualization into the materials-handling area. Implemented within the Arena Visual Designer framework, 3-D animation components can be easily dragged and dropped into the simulation environment without the need for programming or coding.

Simulation provides insight into what changes or improvements are necessary prior to project implementation. A manufacturing plant or warehouse, for example, could determine exactly how many forklifts or how many feet of accumulator conveyor are needed in a new or existing facility before building the facility or purchasing the equipment.

“Businesses cannot afford to make costly mistakes when making changes to their business processes,” said Rob Kranz, director and general manager, Arena Software, Rockwell Automation. “The addition of 3‑D animation capabilities to material handling is one of the many ways that Arena software continues to provide companies with the means to quickly test and evaluate changes before making them in the actual process.”
