ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation Symposium 2013 draws more than 200 attendees

A joint conference of the International Society of Automation (ISA) and the Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) Society attracted more than 200 attendees to Cleveland, Ohio, USA last week to learn about the latest advances in instrumentation and mechanical failure prevention, and to discover practical synergies between the two long-standing professional associations.

The theme of the conference—ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation and MFPT 2013—focused on sensors and process measurement and control systems designed to improve reliability, safety and affordability, particularly in aerospace, oil and gas, chemical and manufacturing. A strong emphasis was placed throughout the technical program on avoiding and significantly reducing hazardous situations and accidents.

In total, more than 120 technical papers and presentations were delivered, 58 through ISA and 62 through MFPS. Other highlights of the event included three high-level keynote presentations, three tutorials, an ISA training course on industrial wireless technology, two technical discussion groups, a panel session, an exhibit (featuring products and services from 19 vendors), technical tours, networking opportunities and social functions.

“Collaborating with ISA on our annual MFPT conference was a huge success,” states Chris Pomfret, MFPT’s Executive Director. “The attendees enjoyed a broader and synergistic technical scope, the exhibitors had access to a larger audience, and the networking value for everyone was raised. With so many conferences being offered and too little time and resources for attendees to participate in all of them, it’s essential that entities like ISA and MFPT collaborate to create successes like this one.”

Ruth Sikorski, the Chair of ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation Symposium (IIS), emphasizes that the conference gave ISA and MFPT the opportunity to educate and prepare technical leaders for the challenges of the future.

“As technical societies, we have an obligation to help train our successors--the ones who will be implementing the next phase of our progression toward a more knowledge-based, net-centric industrial base,” she says.

ISA POWID Symposium 2013

The Symposium will be held 2-7 June 2013 at the Rosen Shingle Creek.  This event will provide power generation industry leaders with information on the latest innovations in controls, instrumentation, cyber security, SmartGrid, regulatory issues and variable energy technologies, which impact the power generation delivery systems.

Each year this international conference, the largest single event of its type, brings together industry professionals in the power generation field with a primary focus on instrumentation and controls. We anticipate over 50 technical papers/presentations during joint sessions with fossil and nuclear focus, presented over a 3 day period. Additional schedule items include keynote messages from industry leaders, ISA and industry training sessions, EPRI Interest Group Meeting, ISA I&C Standards working group meetings, Honors and Awards Banquet, and vendor exhibits by key suppliers. There will also be an Opening Night Reception.

Message from the Symposium Chairman Bill Sotos:

'If you and/or your company are involved in Instrumentation & Control, automation, digital technology, wired and wireless communication, plant and performance software, asset and knowledge management, cybersecurity, and/or simulators and training for power generation, plan to attend the industry’s leading forum for sharing technology, application experiences, and best practices. ISA’s 2013 Power Industry Symposium (POWID 2013) covers all types of power stations -coal, nuclear, gas-fired, gas turbine/combined cycle, and renewable energy (hydroelectric, solar, and wind, and biomass), and smart grid, distributed generation, combined heat and power, and microgrids –all over the world.'

Dates, details and Call for Abstracts opportunities announced for 2013 ISA Water/Wastewater Symposium

The International Society of Automation (ISA) announces the dates and conference details of its 2013 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls Symposium, which will take place 6-8 August 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Orlando-Universal Hotel in Orlando, Florida, USA. Now in its eighth year, the annual symposium offers a unique opportunity for automation, instrumentation and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) professionals in the water and wastewater sectors to share ideas, network and earn continuing education credits.

The 2013 ISA WWAC Symposium is a three-day event that focuses on the challenges associated with providing reliable, secure and cost-efficient automation for the world’s municipal water/wastewater infrastructure. The gathering features two full days of technical speakers/presentations, networking events, a poster session, and a supplier showcase. This year’s program also includes an optional tour of a local water treatment facility, and two optional short courses on SCADA cybersecurity and flow meter section/sizing. ISA WWAC Symposium Partnership with WEF with Award recognizing collaboration

The 2013 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls (WWAC) Symposium, to be held 6-8 August 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Orlando-Universal Hotel in Orlando, Florida, USA, highlights ISA’s ongoing partnership with the Water Environment Federation (WEF). An award recognizing the collaboration between the two organizations was recently bestowed on Thomas DeLaura, vice president of Eramosa International, Inc.

DeLaura was named ISA’s Water and Wastewater Industry Division Member of the Year for his work to promote collaboration between WEF’s Automation and Information Technology Committee and the ISA Water and Wastewater Division. The award is given by the ISA Water and Wastewater Division to recognize a volunteer leader whose contributions have had a significant impact on the water and wastewater automation community.

The WWAC Symposium is experiencing a new-found growth in popularity thanks to newly formed alliances with the WEF, the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA) and the National Rural Water Association (NRWA). By forming strong partnerships with other associations, the symposium has been able to reach a broader cross-section of water and wastewater professionals across the industry. For members of these associations, the symposium provides targeted professional development and training opportunities otherwise inaccessible.

“This collaboration aligns with WEF’s Strategic Direction, connecting water professionals to leverage knowledge and promote innovation,” said DeLaura. “I am very much looking forward to continuing WEF’s technical co-sponsorship of the 2013 WWAC Symposium. It has been a pleasure to be part of the team that brought ISA and WEF together for this symposium, as well as on several other initiatives. The power of such collaboration is uplifting.”
