Yokogawa to release new ISA100 Wireless Module with Built-in Antenna

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that in December it will begin providing sensor manufacturers a new wireless communications module with a built-in antenna. This new module is intended for use in wireless sensors, and will be provided to companies that develop and manufacture these products. Yokogawa has already concluded a contract to license the use of this wireless technology to New Cosmos Electric Co., Ltd., a gas detector manufacturer.

It is expected that this module will drastically reduce the amount of time required to develop ISA100.11a*1 compliant wireless sensors.Yokogawa advocates the Wireless Anywhere concept for the plant-wide use of wireless communications technology and is working hard to promote the use of ISA100 Wireless™*2 communications technology solutions. As part of this strategy, we have developed this module.

In plants, various sensors are used to measure temperature, pressure, level, gas concentration, vibration, and so on. To develop wireless sensors for such applications, not only do manufacturers need to acquire the necessary wireless technologies, they must also comply with the radio regulations and explosion protection standards in each country. Based on the various technologies and knowledge that it has acquired through the development of field wireless systems, Yokogawa has developed a wireless communications module with a built-in antenna that can help sensor manufacturers significantly shorten the time needed for developing wireless sensor products.

New Cosmos Electric, a company with a solid track record in providing gas detection solutions to the manufacturing industry, is planning to develop a wireless gas detector. In view of its high reliability, flexible applicability, and network expandability, the company has decided on an ISA100 Wireless solution for this field wireless product. Accordingly, Yokogawa will provide this module and the technology assistance needed to develop a wireless gas detector.

Fieldbus Foundation Announces Modbus® Integration Into FOUNDATION™

The Fieldbus Foundation has announced that it is developing technical specifications for integration of devices based on the Modbus® communications protocol into its FOUNDATION for Remote Operations Management (ROM) technology. Integration of these instruments will help enable an overall remote operations solution in a wide range of industrial automation applications.

The first development of its kind integrating remote input/output (I/O), ISA100.11a, WirelessHART®, wired HART, and FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 protocols into a single, standard data management environment, FOUNDATION for ROM extends the capabilities of FOUNDATION fieldbus to wired and wireless devices installed in some of the world's harshest and most remote locations. This open, non-proprietary solution provides a unified digital infrastructure for asset management in applications ranging from tank farms and terminals to pipelines, offshore platforms, and even original equipment manufacturer (OEM) skids.

The FOUNDATION for ROM technical specifications for the remote I/O, wired HART, WirelessHART and wireless ISA100.11a interfaces have been completed and were successfully demonstrated at a live end user demonstration at the Petrobras research and development facility (Cenpes) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in April of this year.

The Fieldbus Foundation is now proceeding to develop specifications for Modbus integration into FOUNDATION for ROM. Modbus devices such as well head flow meters and submersible pump controllers need to be integrated as part of the overall solution in some applications.  The Modbus integration team, comprised of end user and supplier engineers, had their kickoff meeting in May hosted by Shell Global Solutions in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Fieldbus Foundation Director of Technology Development David Glanzer said: "We have a great team working on the Modbus integration. They have made exceptional progress on the use case development." Technical Team Leader Todd Shadle of Phoenix Contact agreed, saying, "All of the team members are fully engaged and are eager to complete the specification."

Whether operating on a wired or wireless HSE backhaul network, the FOUNDATION for ROM solution enables automation end users to bring device data into the FOUNDATION fieldbus infrastructure, which provides a single source of data management, diagnostics, alarms and alerts, data quality control, control-in-the-field capability, and object-oriented block structure.

1 and 2-port RS-232/422/485 IEEE 802.11a/b/g wireless device servers

The NPort W2150A/W2250A is the ideal choice for connecting your serial devices, such as PLCs, meters, and sensors, to a wireless LAN. Your communications software will be able to access the serial devices from anywhere over a wireless LAN. Moreover, the wireless device servers require fewer cables and are ideal for applications that involve difficult wiring situations. In Infrastructure Mode or Ad-Hoc Mode, the NPort W2150A/W2250A can connect to Wi-Fi networks at offices and factories to allow users to move, or “roam,” between several APs (Access Points), and offer an excellent solution for devices that are frequently moved from place to place.

  • Link any serial device to an IEEE 802.11a/b/g network
  • 921.6 Kbps baudrate for RS-232/422/485 transmissions
  • Web-based configuration using built-in Ethernet or WLAN
  • Enhanced surge protection for serial, LAN, and power
  • Remote configuration with HTTPS, SSH
  • Secure data access with WEP, WPA, WPA2
  • Built-in WLAN site survey tool
  • Fast automatic wireless fast roaming
  • Off-line port buffering and serial data log
  • Dual power inputs (1 power jack, 1 terminal block)

Advantech Introduces New Intelligent Ethernet I/O Module with Customizable Functionality

Advantech’s Industrial Automation Group, have released a new model to their family of ADAM products. The ADAM-6200 is an Ethernet module with daisy chain networking, remote monitoring and group configuration capabilities. These features enable the ADAM-6200 to connect to multiple devices and deliver information from a large number of sources. To enhance field maintenance, in the event of errors occurring on any of the ADAM-6200s they can be remotely diagnosed and fixed from a smart phone, pad over Ethernet. With the ability to have their functions and web interface modified these devices add an extra level of benefit.

To implement daisy chain networking and save wiring costs the ADAM-6200 has two 10/100 Ethernet ports. In the eventof power failure on a device, the, patent applied, auto-bypass protection feature will ensure that the network connection continues in around 2.5 seconds. With its two ports, a network of ADAM-6200s can be joined together by simply connecting them together, making it easy to expand the network quickly and easily.

With support for independently programmable HTML5, the ADAM-6200 can be customized, monitored and controlled from any compatible Web browser on devices such as a smartphone or tablet whilst in the field and when the engineer is connected to their network. To further aid configuration and save time, engineers can connect to one device, either directly or through a switch, and configure and upgrade the firmware of multiple ADAM-6200s simultaneously.
