FLO-CORP’s Guardian 2000 Wireless System with M2M Functionality for Process Monitoring

FLO-CORP announces the release of the Guardian 2000™, a wireless monitor that transmits data using cell towers and/or satellites, along with pinpoint location of the device through a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite chip. Cell phones, satellite phones, and GPS navigation systems are excellent examples of the technologies in use. FLO-CORP has packaged the benefits of these wireless communications with a web interface that makes process conditions readily available from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. This machine to machine (M2M) functionality is changing industries for the better by offering superior features at a lower cost.

Traditional remote process monitoring relies on wired infrastructure or radio. In some cases, tapping into an existing network or programmable logic controller (PLC) is quite simple. When tanks, open channels, pipelines, or other monitoring applications are located at the same physical location as the company or municipality, the cost of wiring is typically low. The Guardian 2000 is aimed at a different target, addressing monitoring applications that are situated away from existing infrastructure. This segment, typically dominated by radio transmitters, can be covered much more economically and reliably with new wireless monitoring technology.

In a typical remote monitoring setup, the Guardian 2000 monitors by waking up at set intervals, powering up the connected measurement device if applicable (a flow meter, level transmitter, etc), and checking the process condition. If no trigger point is met, the Guardian 2000 powers down the connected device and then powers down itself. The Guardian 2000 wakes up to transmit data to the Monitor My Guardian™ online interface as programmed, once a day for example. If while making a routine check the Guardian finds a process condition change, it can either wake itself more frequently to make additional checks or if an alarm point is met, it will send text and e-mail alerts and report the findings on monitormyguardian.com.

Agilent Technologies releases Analysis Software for USB Protocol Analyzers

Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced a new analysis software suite for the U4611A, U4611B and U4612A family of USB protocol analyzers. The suite features the new MegaZoom technology, offering USB device designers quick and easy insight into their designs' behavior, and streamlining USB test and validation.

"USB has truly become a universal connection for electronic devices," said Ross Nelson, general manager of Agilent's Digital Debug Solutions group. "USB 3.0 designs have been adopted as a default connection for external disk drives and adapters for high-speed networks, placing greater demand on USB performance. The new MegaZoom technology analyzes operations in real time with a full view of the connection's performance, helping designers optimize both new and existing USB devices."

  • MegaZoom technology in the U4611A and U4611B quickly analyzes massive amounts of data and drills into the detail designers need. Features include:
  • MegaZoom delivers up to 18 GB of deep memory data capture without the sluggish response times and complex user interfaces inherent with traditional analyzers.
  • With patented indexing techniques performed in proprietary FPGA designs, MegaZoom can analyze the 5 Gbps bi-directional data of USB 3.0 in real time.
  • Results are displayed in seconds, providing instant access to all events in the capture with a single click.
  • MegaZoom is not a special mode-it performs at full bandwidth in every capture, regardless of additional triggers and analysis performed by the analyzer.

The software allows the U4611A, U4611B and U4612A USB protocol analyzers to monitor and capture bus activity and provide immediate access to the full detail of the entire data capture buffer-up to 18 GB. Real-time performance information is calculated, counted, logged and graphed in a single display. Performance data allows designers to quickly and easily identify the events that are causing throughput problems, endpoint data retry and communication errors.

The Agilent USB protocol analysis software with MegaZoom is available free of charge to all users of the U4611A, U4611B or U4612A family of protocol analyzers. Download it at www.agilent.com/find/USB.

New ISA100 Wireless™ Capabilities Demonstrated at Hannover Messe and ISA Calgary Events

ISA100 Wireless™ product demonstrations at the 2013 Hannover Messe Fair showcased peer-to-peer control, support for three different legacy protocols in a single ISA100 Wireless mesh network, and a gas sensor designed for SIL2 safety applications.

The object-oriented characteristics of ISA100 Wireless enables support for legacy (proprietary) protocols in wireless industrial networks. The Hannover demonstration included devices from FlowServe, Honeywell, and GE independently transmitting control information using proprietary protocols on a single ISA100 Wireless network. ISA100 Wireless’ object-oriented technology assures interoperability within a flexible framework, supports new protocols, and future proofs users’ wireless network investment.

Proprietary protocol support enables device suppliers to easily participate in ISA100 Wireless networks, opening up new market opportunities while mitigating the need/costs to convert their core technology. Legacy protocol support protects user investments in applications already installed at operational sites and enables ISA100 Wireless network evolution.

Peer-to-peer control was demonstrated using an ISA100 Wireless Yokogawa pressure transmitter communicating directly to an ISA100 Wireless Flowserve smart valve positioner. Communication for valve control was direct and did not pass through a gateway device or host system.

Duo-cast technology for reliability, only available with ISA100 Wireless, was highlighted in the Yokogawa product, which demonstrated superior data throughput for critical applications such as control in the field.

ISA100 Wireless’ superior technical features include:

  • True, distributed control in the field (object technology in smart devices)
  • Multiple protocols, including wired HART®, supported in a single network (object technology)
  • Functionality beyond traditional WSN applications
  • Time-enhanced, two-layer AES-128 based security, and support for all AES security levels
  • Easy to use: provision over the air (OTA) or directly using out of band (OOB)
  • Scalable and reliable network tested to 500 devices (to date)
  • Proven reliability in congested wireless environments
  • IPv6-based technology (6LoWPAN) for industrial applications, supports the ‘internet of things’

Advantech introduces Two New 10/100T to Fiber Optic Industrial Media Converters

Advantech’s Industrial Automation Group has announced the launch of two new SC Type Fiber Optic Industrial Media Converters. The EKI-3541M is a multi-mode version which can send data over a distance of 2 km and the single-mode EKI-3541S can send data over 30 km.

These compact devices with simple plug and play installation ensure that network administrators get up and running quickly and easily. In the event of a fault on the device network administrators are instantly alerted, through the use of Link Fault-Pass technology. Which sends the error signal through whichever port is still available. The compact size also allows the devices to be installed in a small cabinet, thereby making the most of the available space.

Having been designed for use in a wide range of environments these models have been IP40 certified, so that they won’t be damaged by excess water and have an operating voltage range of between 8.4 to 52.8VDC so that they spikes caused by low power won’t affect the device’s performance.
