ICONICS announces new Cloud-based Hyper Historian

ICONICS, a Microsoft® Gold Application Development Partner, 2014 Microsoft Public Sector CityNext Partner of the Year award winner and provider of Web-enabled, OPC-based Visualization and Renewable Energy software solutions for Microsoft Windows® operating systems, announces new features for Hyper Historian™ including support for the cloud via Microsoft Azure™.

Hyper Historian is a high speed, reliable and robust industrial plant historian solution designed for mission critical applications. ICONICS’ exciting new cloud-enabled technology makes Hyper Historian one of the first industrial plant historians available on the cloud. It is now more scalable than ever, as clients can leverage Microsoft’s public or private cloud application platform to access their Big Data from any desktop, Web browser or mobile device. This feature reduces IT costs with simple setup and minimal maintenance requirements, allowing customers to infinitely grow their application based on the changing needs of their business. Customers experience increased collaboration while maintaining the security that they have come to expect from ICONICS products.

Another feature in its new release is Hyper to Hyper technology, which enables users to aggregate and merge data from any plant historian server. Hyper Historian servers can now exchange data hierarchically with other Hyper Historian servers or with third-party historians as well. These data exchanges can be triggered on a schedule or manually on demand, regardless of whether the server is located on premises or in the cloud. This enables remote access to the most critical information with maximum flexibility and control.

Taking full advantage of the latest 64-bit .NET-based computing technologies and numerous performance features, including full utilization of multi-core hardware, Hyper Historian is the first plant historian to be compatible with Microsoft Windows 8, Certified for Microsoft Windows Server 2012, and to integrate with SQL Server 2014 and Microsoft Azure. The software also fully leverages OPC UA communication standards, as well as a wide variety of other protocols for connecting to existing infrastructure.

“Due to the highly variable nature of wind power, owner-operators need powerful historians to enable their analysis and understanding of both individual unit and aggregate wind farm performance," said Harry Forbes, Senior Analyst at ARC Advisory Group. "A tool such as Hyper Historian is critical for identifying trends and deviations in unit behavior and diagnosing their root causes.”

The above enhancements add to Hyper Historian's already extensive capabilities that include:

  • Extensive Redundancy – Supports redundancy at all levels, including the use of remote distributed data collectors, multiple distributed loggers and multiple OPC classic and OPC UA interfaces.
  • Intelligent Asset Technology – Hyper Historian can now be integrated with AssetWorX™, the ISA-95-compliant Asset Modeling tool available with the GENESIS64™ HMI/SCADA system. Any analysis derived by Hyper Historian can be included as a property of any asset.
  • Third-party OPC HDA Compliance – Assures interoperability with hundreds of applications and integrates automatic failover to active loggers.
  • Powerful Performance Calculations – The extensive performance calculation capabilities can now be configured to execute on redundant platforms.

Hyper Historian is being used today for plant historian applications in industrial and utility applications throughout the world, including wind asset independent performance verification and generation plant monitoring and analysis.

Yokogawa signs Contract with Dell for provision of dedicated Yokogawa PC Models

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that it has signed a contract with Dell Inc. for the global provision of PC models that are selected and customized for Yokogawa use. Under this contract, which was signed on August 20, Yokogawa will offer high-quality system solutions that utilize Dell PCs and Yokogawa industrial automation (IA) system-related products.

High performance PCs that incorporate the latest technologies are being used more and more in the control systems field, for example, by replacing the dedicated terminals used as human machine interfaces and to connect with host systems. However, while a production control system usually remains in use for a period of one to two decades or even longer, new PC hardware, operating systems, and application software incorporating the latest technologies and offering ever higher levels of performance are continually being released. While incorporating this new PC hardware and software in a control system, the control system supplier must take care to ensure that the overall system continues to meet the highest quality standards. To satisfy this need and offer quality system solutions, Yokogawa has concluded this contract with Dell for the supply of dedicated Yokogawa PC models.

Under the terms of the contract, Dell will supply PCs that have been tested to verify their compatibility with Yokogawa products. Yokogawa will globally distribute these PCs as Yokogawa Certified Models for use with its industrial automation system-related products*. These are "long-life products" that will remain available for twice as long as equivalent commercial off-the-shelf products. To meet a variety of operating conditions and installation requirements, they will be available in a rack-mount or desktop configuration with either a server or client operating system.

Yokogawa releases Energy Performance Analytics Software

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces the November release of Energy Performance Analytics (EP-Analytics), a software tool that uses energy performance indicators (EnPI) to track how energy is being consumed in a plant, identifies gaps between EnPI targets and actual performance, and helps to identify countermeasures to improve energy performance. The EP-Analytics software is powered by the Visual MESA™ energy management and optimization solution.

Development Background:

Manufacturers around the world are working hard to improve their energy performance and protect the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Released in 2011, the ISO50001 standard provides a framework of requirements that help companies in the process industry effectively manage their energy performance and achieve regulatory compliance.

Yokogawa is a leading supplier of advanced solutions and control instrumentation to the process industry and excels in helping manufacturers conserve energy by optimizing their plant operations. In 2013, Yokogawa took a significant stake in Soteica Visual MESA, a world leading supplier of energy management systems with a solid track record in providing solutions for the utility facilities at large industrial complexes. Through this partnership with Soteica, Yokogawa is able to offer the Visual MESA solution to its customers.

The EP-Analytics plant energy performance visualization software is based on Yokogawa's know-how in production processes and operations and is powered by Soteica's Visual MESA energy management and optimization technology.

ICONICS reaches successful Milestone on ARTEMIS eScop Project

ICONICS, a Microsoft® Gold Application Development Partner, 2014 Microsoft Public Sector CityNext Partner of the Year award winner and provider of Web-enabled, OPC-based, HMI/SCADA Visualization and Manufacturing Intelligence software for Microsoft Windows® operating systems, announces that they have successfully reached the one year mark (and first milestone) of the European ARTEMIS eScop project. During this implementation, ICONICS has deployed its GENESIS64™ HMI/SCADA software and MobileHMI™, ICONICS’ mobile application that brings the power of GENESIS64 to any smart device on Any Glass, Anytime™.

The eScop acronym stands for “Embedded systems for Service-based Control of Open manufacturing and Process automation”. It is a project aimed at overcoming current drawbacks for the shop floor control level, including MES and deterministic/real-time control, with the goal of implementing an innovative approach based on the combination of embedded systems, ontology-based knowledge management and service-oriented architecture.

With ICONICS solutions, eScop has reached their goals for the first level of project implementation and achieved project step one completion. The project has been ranked number one in the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking (JU) call of 2012 and continues to reach target installation dates with successful integration. Co-funded by ARTEMIS JU and Member States, eScop consists of ten partners from the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy and Poland and is coordinated by FAST Lab at Tampere University of Technology in Finland.

The project was launched in March 2013 and, by January 2014, the first results were successfully provided and lead to the delivery of requirements and specifications for both technology and concepts constituting the basis for the design and implementation of the overall eScop architecture.

“ICONICS is excited to be working with the ARTEMIS organization on the eScop project,” said Russ Agrusa, ICONICS President and CEO. “We look forward to advancing manufacturing principles through the work jointly performed on this project.”
