Exida certifies Cameron’s Tk Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves For Functional Safety

exida, the global leader in functional safety certification for the process industries, has issued a functional safety certification per IEC 61508 for Cameron’s TK® trunnion mounted ball valves.

The certification ensures that the valves meet the functional safety requirements for Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 capable per IEC 61508.

“At Cameron, we are committed to providing a safe work environment for our employees and providing our customers safe, reliable products for their work environments,” says Charlie Danielson, Cameron Product Manager for TK products.

“As such, we are proud to provide our customers with a product independently certified as SIL 3 capable. For over 50 years, the TK trunnion mounted ball valve has been trusted in the oil & gas industry for critical service applications, providing exceptional reliability, safety, and long service life.”

“The capability of the Cameron process was confirmed through an extensive certification process that included the completion of a Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA),” says Steve Close, exida Evaluating Assessor.

“They demonstrated a solid understanding of the issues necessary to achieve high levels of functional safety.”

Rockwell Automation introduces the Safety Maturity Index Tool to help achieve Safety Performance

Rockwell Automation has announced the Safety Maturity Index (SMI) tool, a self-guided assessment that gives manufacturers visibility into the effectiveness of their safety programs and the ability to optimize plant performance. Applicable to any industry, any plant size and any location in the world, the SMI tool helps manufacturers see where they measure in safety culture, compliance and capital. Most importantly, it provides recommendations to help achieve best-in-class safety performance.

The three principal components of a successful safe workplace – culture (behavioral), compliance (procedural) and capital (technical) – are equally critical and interdependent in developing a strong, sustainable safety program. For example, creating and maintaining a robust safety culture but not investing in safety technologies and/or complying with standards lowers a company’s ability to provide a safe workplace. Likewise, the possibility of risk remains when manufacturers invest in safety technologies but fail to emphasize the importance of safety culture throughout the organization.

Each safety pillar is measureable in the SMI tool using four categories – SMI 1: minimizing investment, SMI 2: attaining compliance, SMI 3: cost avoidance and SMI 4: operational excellence. By answering a series of questions, manufacturers can complete the SMI assessment and determine how they measure in each of the four categories. The report also provides recommendations for improvement, if needed.

“The benefits of optimizing safety through the SMI assessment can result in fewer injuries and fines, as well as improved plant productivity, greater efficiencies and enhanced employee morale,” said Mark Eitzman, safety market development manager, Rockwell Automation, who is presenting the SMI tool at the America’s Safest Companies Conference in Atlanta on Oct. 28-30, 2013. “Achieving best-in-class safety performance begins with assessing current practices companywide, and now customers can do this on their own.”

exida announces the Winners of the 1st Annual exida Safety Awards 2013

exida has announces the products chosen in the 1st Annual exida Safety Awards. exida states that they recognizes the importance of excellence in functional safety, and through extensive analysis of the nominated products, we feel as though the products that have been chosen best demonstrate exceptional work and have the ability to play a key role in the continuous journey of making the world a safer place.

About the Products:

Product: FlexSonic™ Acoustic Detector
Manufacturer: Det-Tronics

The FlexSonic™ Acoustic Detector was commercially released in August 2013 and is designed to recognize the unique ultrasonic frequency content of events such as gas leaks. When a pressurized gas leak occurs, the frequency content of the sound being generated extends beyond the audible portion of the spectrum into the ultrasonic region (above 20 kHz). Acoustic detection is less susceptible to environmental factors (such as high winds) that can degrade the ability of traditional sensing technology based on gas concentration to detect the presence of a leak. When combined with line of sight and/or point gas detectors, the additional layer of protection provided by the FlexSonic Acoustic Detector offers the ultimate solution for gas leak detection.

Product: DeltaV SIS with Electronic Marshalling
Manufacturer: Emerson Process Management

The DeltaV SIS with Electronic Marshalling is a modern approach to increase safety integrity while improving process reliability. It is based on the CHARMs Smart Logic Solver which simplifies the design, installation, wiring and commissioning of SIS projects. DeltaV SIS with Electronic Marshalling provides an integrated, constant monitoring approach for the complete safety loop –from sensor, to logic solver, to final control element. A key component of Emerson’s Smart SIS is to detect field device failures before they cause spurious trips. Electronic marshalling provides unprecedented flexibility to easily change or expand safety loops. In addition to reducing installation, re-work and commissioning cost, DeltaV SIS with Electronic marshaling reduce footprint by eliminating traditional marshaling cabinets.
