How will your Control System run?

Model-based control system design lets engineers create and run simulations of automation models before going live.

Automation engineers traditionally have implemented and tested control algorithms by running them on programmable automation controllers (PAC) connected to machinery. A drawback to this approach is that it can be expensive, difficult or dangerous to test the control strategy for the first time on the machine. A better approach is to first design and test the control system using simulation with a machine model. Simulation can uncover problems earlier in the development process and reduce the number of defects found later in the process, when they are more costly and difficult to fix. when the controller then is connected to the actual machine for testing and validation, engineers have more confidence that the system will behave as expected.

New Flue Gas Combustion Analyzers now Available from Wahl Instruments

A wide range of Flue Gas Analyzers are now offered from Wahl Instruments, Inc. Included in our Test & Calibration equipment catalog, two different lines of analyzers are available; both G Line and U Line models are offered to serve the industrial or professional HVAC technician, including those in compliance with EPA Protocols CTM-030 and CTM-034. The most commonly fuels are pre-loaded at the factory, with other fuels available with included GasConfig software for PC on most models. By measuring the quantities and concentrations of gases present in exhaust, these combustion analysis tools allow the user to maintain the safest and most efficient conditions possible for their environment and equipment. Detect Carbon Monoxide, Nitrous Oxide, and uncombusted hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas from a combustion process to ensure the safety of your employees and the efficiency of your equipment. Identify maintenance problems that develop over time, as boilers deteriorate and efficiency drops.

Marine Fuel Management

Marine fuel costs represent a major portion (60–70%) of a ship’s operating cost. With increasing oil prices and conservation efforts, careful fuel management and increased engine efficiency have become vital for environmental and financial reasons. Fuel flow measurement with Coriolis technology provides the foundation for increased fuel efficiency and accurate accounting of fuel purchases. Even a medium-sized 30,000 DWT vessel can consume 20 tons of fuel oil per day, which at today’s prices is greater than USD6,000 per day.  This white paper describes how Micro Motion Coriolis meters can decrease the cost and waste associated with the fuel supply chain, from on-shore blending and barge loading to ship bunkering and fuel efficiency optimization.

Improving Profits in Natural Gas Measurement by Using Coriolis Check Meters

Coriolis flow measurement technology is roughly 25 years old. However, until the early 1990s, the technology was generally viewed as “not working” on gas  applications.

Micro Motion introduced Coriolis meter designs in the early 1990s that solved the technical hurdles of gas measurement, but there was still a widespread belief that Coriolis meters were unfit for gas applications. To help combat these perceptions about Coriolis meters, Micro Motion conducted a wide range of tests at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Texas, Colorado, Engineering Experimental Station (CEESI) in Colorado, Pigsar/Ruhrgas in Germany, and Gasunie in the Netherlands to prove Coriolis' suitability for gas measurement. The tests demonstrated not only that Coriolis meters perform extremely well in gas applications, but that Coriolis meters can be calibrated on water and that calibration is transferable to gas applications.

Endress+Hauser establishes Saudi Arabian sales center

After a 10-year collaboration with Saudi Arabian sales company Anasia (Abudawood Group), measurement engineering and automation specialist Endress+Hauser will establish a joint venture to seal the partnership and intensify the local market presence.

The new Endress+Hauser sales center, Endress+Hauser Arabia LLC, is a joint venture between the Endress+Hauser Group and Anasia, sister company to the Abudawood Group. Both companies have cooperated closely and successfully inSaudi Arabiain the past. The new sales center will start business with 35 people and will operate from three locations.

With headquarters in the coastal town of Al Khobar, two other offices are located in the capital, Riyadh, and in Jeddah. A service base will be maintained at the Jubail petrochemical complex. Next to the oil & gas industry, power generation, water & wastewater and seawater desalination are other important industries. Craig Horan will assume responsibility as General Manager, having coordinated the Saudi Arabian activities in the past.

"We are pleased that the excellent partnership of the past can now continue on a new and more intensive footing," said Michael Ziesemer, COO of the Endress+Hauser Group. "Our aim is to be closer to our customers in the rapidly growing Middle East markets." The new sales center will be supported by the Endress+Hauser Middle East Support Center in Dubai.

Proline Prosonic Flow B 200 for biogas flow measurement

The biogas market is booming. No wonder, as the gas can be used in a variety of beneficial ways – including fueling vehicles or generating heat and electricity in combined heat and power plants.

The gas is obtained from

  • Fermentation of energy
  • Organic waste
  • Liquid manure
  • Sewage sludge
  • Leftover plant materials

For biogas plants to work properly, various process parameters have to be monitored around the clock: gas composition, pressure, temperature, and above all the produced gas quantity. Prosonic Flow B 200 is an industry-optimized ultrasonic flowmeter that measures the volume flow of biogas, landfill or digester gas reliably and with high accuracy, even under greatly fluctuating operating conditions.

Ultrasonic measurement has numerous benefits compared to conventional methods:

  • Reliable measurement – high accuracy (±1.5%) and a high operable flow range (30:1)
  • Energy saving – no pressure losses
  • Maintenance-free – no moving parts
  • Space-saving – short inlet and outlet runs
  • Wide range of uses – independent of the composition and the moisture of a gas
  • Measurement possible even with minimum operating pressure
