National Instruments announces Next-Generation 5G Collaboration With Nokia

NI has announced that it’s working with Nokia’s Networks business to collaborate on advanced research related to fifth generation (5G) wireless technologies such as exploring peak data rates and cell-edge rates in excess of 10 Gbps and 100 Mbps, respectively.

By using NI’s integrated hardware and software baseband platform, Nokia plans to expedite its research and rapidly demonstrate the viability of high-frequency millimeter wave as an option for 5G radio access technology. “Our experimental 5G Proof-of-Concept system will be implemented using NI’s LabVIEW and PXI baseband modules, which is the state-of-art experimental system for rapid prototyping of 5G air interface available today,” said Lauri Oksanen, vice president of research and technology at Nokia.

“We are thrilled to work with Nokia on this project and others involving wireless research,” said Eric Starkloff, NI executive vice president of global sales and marketing. “Our software-defined platform based on LabVIEW and PXI is ideal for researching and prototyping standards such as 5G.”

Remote control and monitoring of a logic module via SMS by Siemens

Thanks to the Logo! CMR2020 communications module from Siemens, users can control the Logo! 8 logic module or receive status data and alarms via text messages to their cell phones. Once a SIM card has been inserted, the communications module can be accessed as a node on the mobile network. Users can configure different commands in the Logo! 8 for remote access and then trigger them by text message via the communications module. In the other direction, Logo! CMR2020 transmits diagnostics data and alarms as message texts to cell phones previously defined as receivers.

Logo! CMR2020 has a GPS antenna connection that helps, for example, to track the current position of container freight worldwide or to monitor truck shipments. Logo! CMR2020 also enables time-of-day synchronization of the connected logic module, based on time information provided by the mobile phone provider or NTP server, or the GPS time signals. Logo! CMR2020 and Logo! 8 can be deployed, for example, in building control systems, such as for blinds, garage doors, lighting or garden watering systems. The Siemens components are also suitable for simple control tasks in industry, such as pump control or level monitoring.

The Logo! CMR2020 can be quickly and easily connected to the basic Logo! module via an Industrial Ethernet interface. As well as programming commands, the user saves a list of cell phone numbers that are authorized to control and receive process value and diagnostics data, as well as alarms. The message texts for control are password-protected. Using the two inputs and two outputs, Logo! CMR2020 can also be used for simple control tasks as stand alone unit.

National Instruments Introduces USRP RIO Next-Generation Wireless Prototyping Platform

National Instruments had recently announced an integrated software defined radio solution for rapidly prototyping high-performance, multichannel wireless communication systems. The NI USRP RIO platform is built on the NI LabVIEW RIO architecture and combines a high-performance 2 x 2 multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) RF transceiver capable of transmitting and receiving signals from 50 MHz to 6 GHz with an open LabVIEW programmable FPGA architecture.

Wireless engineers can use this technology to rapidly prototype real-time wireless communications systems and test them under real-world conditions. They can also prototype more capable wireless algorithms and systems faster and reduce time to results using the only complete platform to take full advantage of a graphical system design approach. The USRP RIO family delivers high-performance, real-time processing capability with the Xilinx Kintex-7 Series FPGA, low latency with the PCI Express connection to a host computer and small size (1U half wide, 19 in. rack mountable).

USRP RIO is ideal for a wide range of application areas including 5G wireless communications research, active and passive radar development and exploration, communications intelligence, connected smart devices and more. NI USRP™ (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) is already a popular platform for research spanning industry and academia as it empowers researchers to rapidly iterate on designs via programmable software. Simple wiring in the control cabinet - Siemens broadens its Simatic Top Connect portfolio

Siemens has broadened its Simatic Top Connect portfolio with a range of new modules and system components for fast and safe wiring of Simatic S7-1500 and Simatic ET 200MP. In addition to connection modules for eight channels (inputs or outputs), Siemens also offers, for the first time, compact versions for 32 channels that are available for connecting sensors and actuators via one or three wires. Thereby only one cable needs to be connected between the connection module and the S7-1500 controller instead of four for the individual 8-channel modules. In addition, the new 32-channel connection module requires less space on the mounting rail than four modules with eight inputs and outputs each. The new connection modules feature the compact design of the Simatic S7-1500, allowing space-saving installation in the control cabinet. With system cabling, users can save up to 80 percent time compared to conventional single wiring using terminal blocks.

The connection modules with eight channels are available in different versions, with disconnect terminals for manually cutting off specific plant sections, for example, or with relays and optocouplers for adapting the potential with which signals with AC voltages of 110 or 230 volts can also be connected to the controller. The 8-channel connection modules are fully compatible with the field-proven front connector modules for Simatic S7-300 and ET 200 M.

The appropriate system cabling can be selected in accordance with the respective input or output modules simply and quickly in the TIA Selection Tool.
