Kepware updates Local Historian for On-Site Data Visualization and Reporting

KepwareKepware® Technologies, a software development company focused on communications for automation, today announced both strategic updates to its Local Historian Plug-In and key technology partnerships that enable on-site data visualization and reporting. Featured in KEPServerEX® version 5.17 (which will release on February 24, 2015), the enhanced Local Historian Plug-In will include support for aggregates.

The Local Historian is a flexible, easy to use, and cost-effective solution designed to solve tactical data historization challenges. With the release of KEPServerEX version 5.17, the plug-in will support OPC Historical Data Access (HDA) processed read requests. The processed read requests shift the heavy data computation load from the client to the historian server, minimizing the network load from each request. The updates support widely used processed read requests, including Interpolative, Time Average, Total, Average, Minimum Actual Time, and Maximum Actual Time.

Kepware announced key partnerships to help customers optimize their data analysis through third-party visualization and reporting solutions. The Local Historian's design decouples data storage from analytics, reporting, and trending tools so users can choose the solution that best meets their unique needs.

"Since the October 2014 launch of our Local Historian Plug-In, the response from the industry and our customers has been overwhelmingly positive," said John Harrington, Director of Product Management, Kepware. "Largely influenced by customer feedback and requests, Kepware worked quickly to update the plug-in to best address common use cases. We are also pleased to endorse the visualization and reporting solutions with which we have tested the Local Historian, as we feel that they represent many of the industry's most reputable organizations and products."

The Local Historian Plug-In supports high-speed logging to 10 milliseconds and tiered licensing for up to ten thousand tags. Open standards allow locally-stored data to be accessed from multiple clients with no additional cost per client connection.

CERN and NI Collaborate to define the future of LabVIEW Support for Linux 64-Bit

National Instruments, the provider of solutions that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, announced a collaboration with CERN, an intergovernmental research organization building the world’s largest and most advanced scientific instruments. The objective is to push the standardization of all CERN control systems to Linux 64-bit OSs, with goals to boost system performance, design cost-effective distributed control systems and enlarge opportunities for small and medium enterprises with expertise in NI and open-source technologies.

NI has been working with the European Organization for Nuclear Research, more commonly known as CERN, since the early 1990s on applications that help explain what the universe is made of and how it began. Notable collaborations include the Large Hadron Collider collimation system, where applications developed with LabVIEW system design software control stepping motors on approximately 120 NI PXI systems, and the MedAustron ion beam cancer therapy center, for which CERN received three awardsat NIWeek 2013. These common developments have resulted in valuable training for engineers in the fast-growing embedded systems market, and have led to long-term maintainable systems in mission-critical applications.

A recent collaboration between CERN and NI concentrated on CERN’s infrastructure improvement plans. Prior to the public release of LabVIEW support for 64-bit Linux, the Engineering Department (EN) Industrial Controls and Engineering (ICE) Group at CERN, acted as a lead user to help NI define and refine the software features needed to ensure CERN’s success in continuing to use NI tools. By working with CERN early on to learn about its upgrade requirements, NI was able to prioritize key deliverables and gain valuable feedback from CERN to increase the quality of support for 64-bit Linux.

“The EN-ICE Group appreciates the engagement of NI to develop 64-bit software for CER N in a collaborative way,” said Adriaan Rijllart, section leader of the EN-ICE Group. “This very successful initiative is paving the way for exemplary partnerships between fundamental research organizations and industry.”

Matrikon OPC UA Embedded SDK Certified by Independent Test Lab – Now with OPC Security

MAtrikonOPCMatrikon has announced that Version 2.0 of the Matrikon OPC UA Embedded Software Development Kit (SDK) has been certified by the OPC Foundation’s Independent test labs to be compliant with the Embedded OPC Server profile.

To achieve this certification, Matrikon added support for OPC UA security to the industry’s smallest commercially available embedded OPC UA toolkit. This allows product vendors the ability to provide their customers with networked products that deliver secure OPC UA connectivity right out of the box – an important consideration in today’s highly connected but unsecure world.

Darek Kominek, marketing manager at Matrikon commented, “Growing demand for products that easily interconnect and share data in meaningful and effective ways is accelerating the emergence of the Internet of Things. To meet this demand, vendors of networked devices in all sectors of the economy - from industrial to commercial and consumer sectors – need to make their products easy to integrate in a secure manner.”

Kominek further added, “While the OPC UA specification from the OPC Foundation defines how this can be accomplished, Matrikon provides vendors with the means to quickly and easily implement OPC UA directly in their products even when memory and processing resources are limited.”
