JGC Wins Contract to Upgrade Basrah Refinery

JGC Holdings Corporation has recently announced that JGC Corporation has received the Letter of Award for the Basrah Refinery Upgrading Project for an Iraqi oil refining company under the Iraqi Ministry of Oil.

Details of the project are as follows.

1. Client: South Refineries Company (Oil refining company under the Iraqi Ministry of Oil)
2. Construction location: Basrah, Republic of Iraq (Approx. 550 km SE of the capital of Baghdad)
3. Primary equipment (processing abilities): Fluid catalytic cracking unit (34,500 barrels/day), vacuum distillation unit (55,000 barrels/day), diesel desulfurisation unit (40,000 barrels/day), etc.
4. Contract services: Engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning
5. Contract type: Lump sum contract
6. Order amount: Approx. 4 billion dollars (400 billion JPY)
7. Scheduled completion: 2025


Iraq is one of the world's leading oil-producing countries, with a confirmed crude oil reserve of 145 billion barrels and a daily crude oil production of 4.41 million barrels. However, the two refineries currently in operation were constructed in the 1970s and their production capacity has decreased due to war damage and deterioration. Unable to meet domestic demand for petroleum products, Iraq has to import petroleum products such as gasoline.


ABB technology helps Dubai develop smart solar strategy

ABB technology is supporting the development of new smart solar power systems for the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dubai Electric & Water Authority (DEWA) is using the ABB AbilityTM Electrical Distribution Control System to help develop data-driven strategies that maximize year-round solar energy production as part of the Smart Dubai initiative.

Smart Dubai is the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The city is hard-wiring Smart Design into its fast-evolving infrastructure in a series of greenfield initiatives that offer emerging economies a blueprint for sustainable development.

The ABB Ability Electrical Distribution Control System is being employed by DEWA to monitor production at ABB’s Al Quoz photovoltaic solar system. The 312kW installation is the largest privately owned solar rooftop in the region, powering the ABB facility and feeding surplus energy into the grid. ABB’s cloud-based platform makes it easy for DEWA analysts to integrate the power production data with other information, such as weather forecasts and actual rooftop temperatures.

Dubai aims to generate 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 and the development of a viable solar power market is key to this. DEWA is fast-tracking the introduction of digital innovations that will help better manage the city’s energy consumption and production with smart grids and smart meters.

Data from ABB Ability Electrical Distribution Control System enables DEWA to understand the effect of temperature and other seasonal changes on the yield from solar power systems,” said Loay Dajani, ABB Lead Division Manager - MEA, Electrification Products Division. “The ABB Ability Electrical Distribution Control System is the perfect platform for this kind of collaborative project, producing the data needed for power distribution systems to integrate effectively into smart city concepts.”

Although the UAE enjoys long periods of sunshine each year, the high ambient temperatures can also limit the efficiency of photovoltaic cells. In June, July and August, ambient temperatures in Dubai can reach 50-52°C. In these conditions, roof-mounted solar power systems can reach temperatures of 68°C.

The ABB Ability Electrical Distribution Control System is a cloud-based platform for electrical systems that monitors plant performance, uses data analysis to identify optimization opportunities, and enables the remote implementation of more effective power management strategies. It connects the electrical equipment, using the Emax 2 smart circuit breaker, with cloud-based intelligence and algorithms, removing the need for expensive additional devices and complex programming.

 

Technip awarded a three-year contract by Total E&P Angola for engineering services

Technip Angola Engenharia Limitada, a joint venture between Technip and Sonangol, has been awarded by Total E&P Angola a three-year engineering services contract. This contract covers services for the existing Girassol, Pazflor, Dalia and CLOV floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units and associated subsea field development. These FPSOs are located in Block 17, offshore Angola.

The scope of work can comprise engineering, technical assistance, management, supervision and coordination, as well as procurement-related activities. Technip Angola Engenharia Limitada will carry out the contract, which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2018.

Jacobs Wins Contract for Sahara Petrochemicals Facilities in Saudi Arabia

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today it received a three-year contract from Sahara Petrochemicals (Sahara) to provide general engineering services at Sahara’s Jubail Industrial City facilities in Saudi Arabia.

Under the terms of the contract, Jacobs is expected to provide engineering, procurement, construction supervision, project management, pre-commissioning and commissioning support to a range of small- to medium-sized capital projects for Sahara’s propane dehydrogenation, poly propylene, chlor alkyl, ethylene dichloride and peripheral utilities operating facilities.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Senior Vice President Oil and Gas Bassim D. Shebaro stated, “Jacobs has had a presence in the Middle East for many years serving the Oil, Gas, Buildings and Infrastructure sectors. This contract enables us to expand our presence in Jubail as part of our overall commitment to providing world-class services to our clients across the region."

Yokogawa Wins Control System Orders for Large Thermal Power

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that two of its subsidiaries, Yokogawa Electric Korea and Yokogawa Solution Service Corporation, have received orders to provide control systems for thermal power and desalination plants that are to be constructed for Umm Al Houl Power, a Qatari company whose main businesses are power generation and water desalination.

The control system orders received by Yokogawa Electric Korea are for a thermal power plant and a reverse osmosis desalination plant, and they were placed by Samsung C&T and Acciona Agua, respectively. The control system order received by Yokogawa Solution Service is for a multi-stage flashing system desalination plant, and it was placed by Hitachi Zosen Corporation.

These plants are being built for Umm Al Houl Power at a location 20 km south of Doha, the capital of Qatar, and the power and water produced there will be provided to the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for a period of 25 years. The power plant will utilize a combined cycle power generation system*1. One of the desalination plants will utilize a reverse osmosis process*2, and the other will rely on a multi-stage flash distillation process*3. The capacity of the power plant will be 2.4 GW and the combined daily capacity of the two desalination plants will be 590,000 m3. These plants are scheduled to commence providing electricity and water in 2017.

For this project, Yokogawa will deliver the CENTUMR VP integrated production control system and the ProSafe®-RS safety instrumentation system. In addition to being responsible for engineering, the company will provide support for the installation and commissioning of these systems. The CENTUM VP system will be able to monitor and control operations at all three plants.
